National Discussion Group
Selection of Instructional Materials for Reading Intervention

You are invited to participate in a national online "discussion" of District Reading First Directors, Remedial Reading Directors and District Reading Directors to share your thoughts, ideas and insights on: your processes, priorities, and opinions related to the selection of instruction materials for reading intervention. NOTE: This cohort discussion group is for school district leaders from school districts with enrolments of 10,000 or more students.

This research will use an online discussion room that is modeled after the traditional focus group format - to generate group interaction and discussion. As with a traditional focus group, a moderator will present questions for discussion. A key advantage over a traditional focus group is that you choose the time and place of your participation. You'll participate without ever leaving your seat, at a time that is convenient to you.

What's in it for you?
  • This is an opportunity for you to share your opinions and interact with other educators about a topic of great interest to you - the selection of instructional materials for reading intervention
  • As an added incentive, we will provide a $150.00 honorarium.
  • A great opportunity to connect with leaders and colleagues across the nation
  • An opportunity to provide leadership in professional growth in your chosen field
  • An opportunity to take part in a new kind of online - learning activity for professional growth.
What's required of you?
  • Use a computer that can connect to the Internet. (A high speed connection is not required, but it will make it easier and faster to participate.)
  • Answer 8-10 questions in detail. We're looking for thoughtful, expansive responses in full sentences - not quick, short phrase responses.
  • Comment on the responses of other participants (e.g., tell us whether you agree or disagree and why, or if you've had a similar experience).
  • Interact with the website 3 or more times over the course of 1 full week.
  • Participate actively for 2-3 hours throughout the course of the week. (You're welcome to spend more time if you have more to say.) The online discussion room is available 24/7, so you'll have flexibility as to when you'll participate.
How does it work?
  • The discussion begins on a Monday and runs through Sunday. (But as you'll notice in the bullets below, you can start a bit later and end a bit earlier.)
  • The first discussion questions will be posted to the website on Monday morning, by 9 AM Eastern. (All times below are for the Eastern time zone. Please adjust for your time zone.)
  • You're expected to log on to the website on between Monday 9 AM and Tuesday at 12 PM Eastern. Within that range, you can decide exactly when to respond. You'll answer the questions in detail, and we'd also like you to comment on the responses of others. (We encourage you to come back to the website within this schedule to see how the responses and discussion are shaping up.)
  • By Tuesday at 3 PM Eastern, the group's moderator will have reviewed your responses and will post follow-up questions.
  • You'll respond to the follow-up questions between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday noon Eastern. Within that timeframe, you'll also spend some time commenting on the responses of others - as if you were having a conversation with them and the moderator. Again, you'll choose convenient days and times to participate within the schedule.
  • By Thursday at 3 PM Eastern, the group's moderator once again will have reviewed your responses and will post one or more additional questions.
  • You'll have through Sunday night to respond to these questions and engage in "conversation" with others about their responses. Depending on your personal schedule, you might respond initially on Thursday afternoon and then check back again on Sunday night to review the responses of others and offer comments. Or you might schedule your participation on Friday and Saturday afternoon. Or you might just dedicate a chunk of time on Sunday afternoon. We're flexible.
  • In all, you'll participate in the discussion 3 or more times over the course of the week - spending 2 or more hours in total. (Of course, we encourage you to visit the discussion as many times as possible, and to spend as much time participating as your can.)
  • NOTE: This cohort discussion group is for school district leaders from school districts with enrolments of 10,000 or more students.
